What is saju?

Saju (사주, "four pillars") is the Korean form of an East Asian system that reads your birth moment as eight characters. Koreans use it for self-understanding, timing big decisions and checking compatibility before marriage.

Four pillars, eight characters

Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a pillar. Every pillar has two characters: a heavenly stem on top (one of ten) and an earthly branch below (one of twelve, the zodiac animals). Four pillars of two characters make eight, which is why saju is also called 사주팔자, "four pillars, eight characters." In everyday Korean, 팔자 (palja) simply means fate.

Your Day Master

The stem of your day pillar is your Day Master (일간). It represents you, and it is the core of any reading. There are ten Day Masters, a yin and yang version of each element, which makes them a natural set of personality types. Meet the ten types.

The five elements

Each character carries one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. They feed each other in a cycle (Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, and so on) and control each other in another. A saju reading looks at which elements you have plenty of, which are missing, and which bring you into balance. Learn the elements.

How saju differs from Western astrology

Western astrology maps the planets at your birth. Saju uses the solar calendar and the sixty-step cycle of stems and branches instead. It focuses less on planets and more on balance, timing and relationships.

How it differs from the Chinese zodiac

The zodiac animal most people know is just one character of eight: the branch of your year pillar. Saju also starts the year at Ipchun, around February 4, rather than at Lunar New Year. See why that can change your animal.

Saju in Korea today

Saju cafes line the streets of Hongdae in Seoul, couples compare their gunghap (궁합) before marriage, and in 2026 AI saju sites went viral across Korea. A 2026 survey found about two-thirds of Koreans in their twenties and thirties are interested in saju.
